The First Week of School Expectations
The first week of school is exciting — new teachers, new classmates, and a fresh start.
But along with the excitement comes a lot of adjustment. What we often forget is that kids
are being stretched in every direction during this transition: emotionally, physically,
and socially.
They’re navigating new routines, learning classroom rules, remembering where everything
is, and figuring out their place in a new group of peers. It’s a lot to take in, and while
it may look like they’re handling it just fine, under the surface they’re working
overtime.
That’s why the best advice for this week is simple: don’t plan anything extra. This is not
the time to add new activities, big outings, or extra commitments. Instead, allow your
child space to rest and recharge.
This weekend especially, expect them to need downtime. Pajamas, movies, quiet play, or
family time at home are exactly what they need to restore their energy and prepare for
week two.
By giving your child permission to slow down, you’re not only protecting their well-being,
but also setting them up for a smoother, more successful school year. Sometimes, the best
way to support our kids is by doing less, not more.
